Martin Davies who has just marked one year as chair of the Poole Museum Foundation says it has been “a brilliant” 12 months and that he has “absolutely loved it.”
In 2025 the Rawlins Davy Reeves chairman was asked to take on the role along with a completely new board of trustees as the museum prepared to reopen after a three year, £11m refurbishment.
“I was really proud to accept. I consider it a great honour and a privilege,” he said.
“After a year we are beginning to find our feet as board and getting our direction in terms fundraising, bringing in exhibitions and engaging with the community.”
The Poole Museum Foundation was established some years ago to support, develop, and promote the museum – from new acquisitions and exhibitions to learning programmes that make culture accessible to all.
Martin added: “Everything we do is about helping Poole Museum thrive, both now and for future generations. And because we are a charity we can gift aid donations.
“Poole Museum remains free to enter – and that is something we are determined to protect. That is our big goal. But this is only possible through a broad base of support: from generous philanthropists, forward thinking corporate partners, and civic leaders who recognise the vital role culture plays in shaping a thriving, confident community.”
The museum reopened in stages beginning last summer with Scaplens Court, then the shop and the full museum in November.
In that time, as astonishing 185,000 people have visited.
“We have done well with donations so far, but if every visitor just gave a pound, you can see how much it would raise. It would be a game-changer.”
Martin describes the museum as having local, regional, national and growing international significance.
It has recently been hosting a exhibition of Lucian Freud’s exceptional collections of etchings, on loan from the V&A. His work is admired around the world.
Martin is also a big fan of the Poole Power Station exhibition.
He added: “As a resident of Poole and with our business being at the other end of high street, I am delighted to play a part in the future of this wonderful museum. I want Poole to be the best it can be.
“I encourage everyone to visit. It’s not just a museum it’s a community space.
